Are we really that surprised about Miley Cyrus’ performance at the MTV VMAs? I mean c’mon folks, it’s MTV. When teen stars “grow up”, they often find it necessary to do these types of things…
Miley’s trying to prove she’s no longer “Daddy’s little girl Disney teen bopper” anymore. I’m one of the seemingly proud few that didn’t even notice. I don’t watch the VMAs (or really any award show for that matter) and crap like this is one of the reasons why. I have better things to do than watch dancing teddy bears with their tongues sticking out. I might be able to make some room in my schedule to watch Miley take it in the ass from Robin Thicke, though.
After seeing all the social media banter about this particular performance and all the outraged reactions, I couldn’t help but get on my iPhone, fire up YouTube, and give it a look. I can’t say I regret doing so because I’m now an educated soul in regards to this media firestorm. I feel a lot better and I feel like I’m part of the cool crowd now.
Is this what it’s really come down to? I can’t and won’t say that Miley made an idiot of herself in front of millions of people. Hell, she’s the famous one that undoubtedly boosted chatter about MTV’s premier show. She was doing her thing the way she wanted to do it, mock neck sucking, anal, teddys and all. I must admit I’m not really bothered by the performance and neither am I surprised. I’m not bothered by it because it’s MTV, Miley’s “growing up”, and that’s the type of mindset MTV is targeting. I’m not surprised by it because…well…take a look around at the world we live in. This is entertainment for the masses.
We’re all talking about it, and that’s all that matters…right?
When it comes down to it, MTV fans (and even people who just watch the VMAs and no other shows on MTV) have no room to complain or be shocked at anything. With shows like “Teen Mom,” “16 And Pregnant”, “Jersey Shore”, “Snooki & JWOWW”, and other brain-numbing material (excluding “Beavis and Butt-Head” of course), how can any fan of MTV and its wild ways be surprised at all? Miley’s softcore saunter shouldn’t really even be a topic of discussion. You expected class from the VMAs?
I saw a few comments on Facebook about what Billy Ray must think of his daughter’s stage debacle. Really, what does it matter? What’s he gunna do about it? Help slide Robin’s Thicke penis into his daughter’s eagerly awaiting behind? Miley Cyrus is a grown woman (I use that term loosely) who is free to do as she chooses. She has money to burn and is most likely set for life in the financial department. What does she care? Reputation? She built that up with the whole Hannah Montana moniker. It’s all about “creative freedom” and having fun now, and dammit, she certainly did just that.
That was then. This is now. “I’m a big girl now,” she’s probably thinking. “This is my way of expressing myself and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do about it. If you don’t like it, don’t watch.” If this is in fact what is going through the mind of the iconic Miley, I must say I don’t disagree with her.
At this year’s MTV VMAs, Cyrus’ act truly was a foam finger #1, at least in my mind. It’s the only goddamn thing I could tell you about the show, anyways.
